Welcome to The Holden School
At The Holden School, we understand that for many children and young people, feeling safe, understood and emotionally secure must come before learning can truly begin.
Through our two distinct specialist provisions, we provide personalised therapeutic education for pupils with Autism, associated SEMH needs and complex profiles — including young people experiencing Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA).
Our Firs Lane provision supports pupils from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 4 within a calm, nurturing and structured environment specifically designed for children with Autism and complex additional needs. Using trauma-informed, neuro-affirming and relationship-led practice, we help pupils develop communication, emotional regulation, independence and confidence, enabling them to reconnect positively with learning and school life.
Our Chapel Street provision supports secondary and post sixteen young people with Autism and associated SEMH needs who benefit from a more personalised and preparation-for-adulthood focused pathway. Many of our pupils arrive having experienced significant barriers to education, anxiety around school attendance or difficulties within larger educational environments. Through strong therapeutic relationships, flexible approaches and meaningful opportunities, we help young people rebuild trust, re-engage with education and develop the resilience, skills and aspirations needed for adulthood.
What makes The Holden School different is our unwavering commitment to understanding the individual behind the behaviour. We recognise strengths, reduce barriers and create environments where children and young people feel genuinely valued, respected and able to succeed.
Across both provisions, relationships sit at the heart of everything we do. Our specialist teams work closely with families, local authorities and external professionals to ensure every child receives the right support, in the right environment, at the right time — helping them not simply access education, but truly thrive within it.
Vision
Our personal approach to education starts from the moment a child is referred to us. Children come to us with a range of complex needs and challenging personal experiences and it’s important that we assess these against our provision to ensure that we are the right school for them.
Our Values
Our ethos is focused on individuality. We pursue the promise that everyone involved in our school – staff, pupils, parents and families – are recognised for their unique value.
Our Aims
We aim to develop a learning framework that really rewards the pupil’s strengths and supports their vulnerabilities, encouraging students to develop resilience and inner discipline.
